Web2Learn: Citizen science activities in Limnos island, Greece

Citizen science brings together ordinary people with researchers to provide solutions to socio-environmental issues, thus advancing citizen engagement in science.

Since 2014, Web2Learn has developed expertise in co-designing, implementing and assessing citizen science projects in various fields, from social sciences to natural sciences and advanced technologies. This expertise stems from two key factors of success:

  1. Web2Learn’s team of experts in citizen engagement methodologies and management of EU-funded projects;
  2. Experience gained in over 40 transnational cooperation projects, mostly EU-funded, in citizen science, indicatively European Citizen Science, GROMADA, Acting4Water and CitSci4All.

Foreseen citizen science actions in Limnos

Web2Learn’s ongoing commitment to fostering community-driven citizen science actions on the island of Limnos is tangibly reflected in a series of upcoming activities  meticulously planned and implemented by our experienced team.

Precisely:

  1. [air quality] In cooperation with the National Observatory of Athens, Web2Learn will purchase and place air quality measuring devices at three locations in Limnos, combined with educational activities for young citizen scientists at schools on the island.  The scientific and educational framework will be co-designed by the Observatory and Web2Learn.

2. [coastal biodiversity] In collaboration with the Nautical Club of Limnos, Web2Learn will organise two actions:

A) A beach cleaning and regular marine litter data collection and reporting. This citizen science project is part of the nationwide “Adopt a beach” campaign launched by WWF Greece. The type of marine litter will be documented by pictures and aggregated for scholarly research in the open repository Adopt a beach.
