Empowering deaf and hard-of-hearing citizens socially through their collaboration with hearing students Promoting accessibility to health services

The path to social empowerment and inclusion involves raising awareness and promoting cooperation—on an equal footing—between hearing citizens and their deaf and hard-of-hearing fellow citizens. At the same time, the role of future teachers is crucial for the social empowerment of students and tomorrow’s active citizens of a society.

In this context, BOLD’s action in Thessaloniki aims to empower deaf and hard-of-hearing citizens through their collaboration with students from the Department of English Language and Literature at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH). Specifically, focusing on the needs and accessibility issues that our deaf fellow citizens face when they need medical care, the action will produce a series of videos in Greek and International Sign Language by mixed teams (students and deaf citizens).

Specifically, the students will assist in co-designing the script and texts for the videos in Greek, as well as translating and adapting the subtitles into English. Each team will focus on a topic related to the health needs of deaf people (e.g., accessibility, public awareness, training of medical and nursing staff). The videos will be available in open access, thus enhancing inclusion and awareness of the medical care and support needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing citizens.

The action is being implemented by the Web2Learn team, consisting of Katerina Zourou and Stefania Oikonomou, in collaboration with Marina Matthaioudaki, professor at the Department of English Language and Literature of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Marina Matthaioudaki, Evangelia Kyritsi, member of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), and the Association of the Deaf of Northern Greece (EKBE).

Action's results

The mixed groups (students and deaf/hard-of-hearing young people) created the series of videos, writing the script themselves and filming them during the third workshop. The videos have Greek and English subtitles. We would like to thank the students of the Department of English Language and Literature at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki for providing the English subtitles.

Below, the first series of videos has Greek subtitles and the second has English subtitles.

Educational and social value of our action

Through collaboration in mixed groups (hearing students of English Literature at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and deaf citizens), our action aims to bring about the following positive results, which have added educational and social value:

a) the development of knowledge and skills in future teachers (AUTH students) that will enable them not only to perform their teaching role in an inclusive and accessible manner, but also to empower their students socially,

b) strengthening the voice, initiative, and sense of belonging among our deaf and hard-of-hearing fellow citizens, who highlight their needs and actively work and mobilize together with hearing people.

Student workshops with Deaf and hard-of-hearing citizens

1st workshop

Introduction of the students to the deaf and hard-of-hearing participants. Formation of groups and initial ideas for video topics.

2nd workshop

Finalization of video topics and script writing. The aim is to ensure that the videos in Greek Sign Language are understandable, high quality, and accessible, highlighting the experiences of deaf people in the field of health.

3rd workshop

The groups will share their progress, as well as any issues or thoughts that have arisen. Creation of videos and translation of subtitles into English by the students.

4th workshop

The teams will present their videos, followed by a group discussion about their experience.
