How do the Posidonia seagrass meadows contribute to healthier marine ecosystems and sustainable local communities in Lemnos? How can citizens and institutions safeguard Posidonia seagrass which is now at risk?<\/p>

What is the Posidonia seagrass<\/strong>
It is an underwater plant that helps us address the consequences of climate change by achieving 10-18% of total ocean carbon storage! Thanks to seagrass, this \u201cblue carbon\u201d is safely stored on our ocean floor and not released into the atmosphere, causing severe health problems to people and a temperature rise! The Posidonia seagrass in Lemnos is also home to over 1000 species of marine animals and 300 species of plants!<\/p>

The campaign<\/strong>
The Lemnos Marine Conservation Expedition 2024 is a crowdfunding campaign calling on locals, tourists, public and private institutions to support the safeguarding of this unique resource. The campaign aims to raise funds to launch mapping of the Posidonia seagrass in Lemnos that will be carried out by the research vessel \u201cAegean Explorer\u201d and the scientific team of the Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation (AIMC). The campaign is an initiative of the non-profit organisation Lemnos Marine Conservation (LMC).<\/p>
